The Importance of Sound Barrier Materials

Sound proofing involves the use of both sound absorption materials as well as sound barrier materials. Sound absorption devices are normally lightweight and porous; their main function is absorption of sound waves and its dissipation. The best sound proofing materials include mineral wood, foam and fiberglass. On the other hand sound barrier materials function by reflecting noise back into each room instead of absorption. Most of these types of equipment are manufactured from thick and non-porous materials like gypsum board, concrete or steel. Sound barriers are normally in office spaces or homes that are in close proximity to busy and noisy roads or railway stations in order to prevent or lower the quantity of sound that reaches these spaces.  Though most noise barrier system look similar to fences on the roadside; they are built after detailed precision and calculations.

Sound Barrier Materials
What kind of sound barrier material you need to use depends on the extent of sound pollution and what kind of material will suit your requirements the best. If you prefer economical as well as cost effective sound barrier materials, make sure that they are of excellent quality and manufactured by well-known brands.
• Acrylic and glass sheets are a good option and the best thickness to opt for is around one inch.
• Plywood though not as good as drywall, is much sturdier and its ideal thickness is around half an inch.
• Plasterboard, gypsum or drywall is other sound barrier materials that are quite effective for soundproofing your space.
• Fiberglass reinforced plastic panels and mass loaded vinyl are proven to be extremely effective even though their thickness is just a quarter of an inch, but they are quite costly compared to other soundproofing barriers.
